  1. 1842–43

The Mysteries of Paris (Les Mystères de Paris)

    Eugène Sue

July Monarchy. France. written in French.

A sprawling newspaper serial of the Parisian underworld, with reformed criminals and a prince who rescues the poor.

    What it handed down

    To Les Misérables (1862)

    Thematic kinship, probable.

Sue's serial made the Parisian underworld and the reformable convict a mass-market subject. Hugo began drafting the book, then called Les Misères, in 1845 in the wake of Sue's success, and treats the same ground of slums, thieves' slang, and redemption.

    Where it came from

The line stops here: minor branch; Sue's roots in serial journalism and the Gothic are not followed.
