    The Robbers (Die Räuber)

    Friedrich Schiller

Sturm und Drang. Württemberg. written in German.

Karl Moor, disinherited through the plots of his brother Franz, becomes a robber captain who believes he can right the world's wrongs by crime.

    What it handed down

To Notes from Underground (Zapiski iz podpolya) (1864)

    Thematic kinship, probable.

The Underground Man repeatedly mocks 'the sublime and the beautiful' and the Russian romantic who dreams Schillerian dreams. Dostoevsky loved Schiller in youth, and Notes turns against that idealism, of which Karl Moor is the emblem.
